Surfside Beach is a year-round destination, but what you get depends entirely on when you arrive. Here’s an honest breakdown of each season so you can plan the trip that actually fits.
Summer (June–August)
Peak season. Water temperatures reach the mid-70s°F, which makes the Atlantic genuinely comfortable for swimming. The beach is at its busiest, restaurants fill up early, and demand for vacation rentals is highest. If you’re coming in July or August, book well ahead — months in advance if you want a specific home for a specific week. Evenings are warm enough to stay outside late, and the longer days mean more time on the water.
Early Fall (September–October)
The best-kept secret on the Grand Strand. Water temperatures stay warm well into October — often around 70°F — while the summer crowds have gone home. Restaurants are easier to get into, rates are lower, and the beach feels like it belongs to fewer people. September and October are consistently the months guests say they’ll return for. It’s the time of year that changes your expectations of what a Surfside Beach trip can be.
Winter (November–February)
Quiet. Very quiet. Surfside Beach in winter is for people who want a proper break from noise — long walks on an empty beach, fresh seafood without a queue, and nothing that has to happen. Temperatures range from the low 40s to the high 50s°F, which isn’t beach weather but is comfortable for exploring. Some restaurants reduce hours in the off-season, so it’s worth checking ahead. Rates are at their lowest and availability is generally open.
Spring (March–May)
Warm without being hot, and active without being peak-season crowded. Spring break brings families in late March and early April, so that window books quickly. Mid-April through May is excellent — good weather, moderate crowds, and the beach coming alive again. Azalea season in the Lowcountry is also worth timing a visit around, particularly for a trip to Brookgreen Gardens about 15 minutes south of Surfside Beach.
What We’d Recommend
Families who want the full beach experience: July works — just book early. Couples and smaller groups: September or October, without question — warm water, open restaurants, quiet town. Those who want to properly decompress: a winter week in Surfside Beach tends to stay with people longer than a summer one.
